Your Career in Germany
Health Insurance in Germany
A Mandatory Requirement for Work and Study
If you are planning to move to Germany as a healthcare professional, obtaining valid health insurance is a legal requirement.
- Employees
- Healthcare professionals in supervised positions
- Fully licensed professionals
- Students enrolled at a German university
If you are planning to move to Germany as a healthcare professional, obtaining valid health insurance is a legal requirement.
When Must Health Insurance Start?
Health insurance must begin on the same date as your employment contract. It cannot start after your first working day, and it does not need to begin before the contract date it must start simultaneously with the official start of employment.
- The employer pays approximately half of the statutory insurance contributions
- Social security registration depends on your insurance status
If you are entering Germany as a student, the university will also require proof of valid health insurance. Without it, students risk losing their enrollment status and cannot legally continue their studies.
In some cases, the German embassy may also request proof of health insurance during the visa process.
How the German Health Insurance System Works
Germany operates under a dual health insurance system:
1. Statutory Health Insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung GKV)
Most employees and students are enrolled in the public statutory health insurance system. Contributions are income-based and are usually deducted directly from your salary (for employees).
2. Private Health Insurance (Privat Krankenversicherung PKV)
In certain cases, individuals may qualify for private health insurance depending on income level and employment status.
For most MEDJOB candidates beginning their professional career in Germany, statutory health insurance is the standard and most common option.
MEDJOB is not an insurance provider. However, we support our candidates during the administrative process once they have secured a work contract in Germany.
We assist by:
- Guiding you through the application procedure
- Connecting you with trusted contacts in Germany
- Supporting communication with health insurance providers
- Ensuring that you receive the official insurance confirmation required by your employer
All you need to do is:
1. Send us your request including your name, contacts and employment details
2. Our German-based contacts will coordinate directly with you to finalize the process
Our goal is to make sure your insurance begins exactly on the required date and that all documents are prepared correctly.
Important Note
MEDJOB (a project of ANSAL IPS) does not sell insurance products and does not charge additional fees for basic coordination support.
The insurance contract is concluded directly between you and the selected health insurance provider under their official terms and conditions.
We aim to ensure a smooth and compliant transition into the German healthcare system.
