Opening a Blocked Account for Germany
A Key Requirement for International Medical Professionals
If you are planning to move to Germany as an international healthcare professional, one of the most important administrative steps may be opening a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto).
- As a job seeker
- During the professional recognition process
- While preparing for licensing examinations
- As a language course participant
- Or without a signed employment contract
If you are planning to move to Germany as an international healthcare professional, one of the most important administrative steps may be opening a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto).
A blocked account is a special type of bank account required for certain German visa categories.
You deposit a legally defined minimum amount before entering Germany. After arrival, a fixed monthly portion of that amount is released to you to cover living expenses.
This ensures that:
- You can sustain yourself financially
- You do not depend on public funds
- Your visa application meets official financial requirements
The required minimum amount is set by German authorities and may change annually.
In addition to financial proof, you may also need temporary health insurance coverage for the period before you sign your employment contract in Germany.
During this initial phase:
- You are not yet enrolled in statutory health insurance (GKV)
- You may still need proof of valid insurance for visa or residence purposes
- You must be covered from the day you enter Germany
For this transitional period, private health insurance solutions are typically used.
The insurance provided during this early phase is typically private insurance for temporary coverage.
Once you sign your employment contract in Germany, you will normally transition into statutory health insurance (GKV), which begins simultaneously with your work contract.
